These two young white rhino calves capture the gentle, vulnerable side of a species known for its size and strength. White rhino babies stay close to their mothers for up to three years, relying on them for protection, milk, guidance, and the security of her constant presence. A mother’s vigilance is their greatest defence — she shields them from predators, teaches them how to graze, and leads them to water and safe resting spots. But life in the wild can be harsh. Territorial clashes between adult bulls, or encounters with poachers, sometimes leave calves orphaned and alone. Too young to survive by themselves, these little ones often end up in specialised rhino orphanages, where they receive round-the-clock care, rehabilitation, and eventually — when they are strong and confident enough — a carefully managed rewilding process. This illustration is a reminder of both their innocence and the immense effort needed to protect the next generation of these iconic animals.
