Warthogs are the delightful paradox of the African bush — comical at first glance, yet powerful, alert, and far more formidable than their playful demeanour suggests. Known for their unmistakable “aerial tails,” they dash through the grass with tails held bolt upright, a built-in flag that helps family members follow one another at high speed. Despite their humorous Pumbaa reputation, warthogs are a favourite prey of leopards and lions, which makes their vigilance — and their explosive ability to sprint or fight — essential to survival. A large boar’s sharp tusks and fearless charge can be unexpectedly dangerous when threatened. One of their cleverest survival tactics is reversing into their burrows, positioning their tusks outward so any predator meets the business end of a very determined defence. Their habit of grazing on their knees is not laziness but adaptation: with short legs and long snouts, kneeling allows them to comfortably crop short grasses and roots while conserving energy. This pen-and-ink artwork is a characterful piece for collectors drawn to the humour and resilience.
