Meerkats are the charming strategists of the African landscape — alert, social, and deeply cooperative, living in tight-knit colonies where survival depends on teamwork. While some forage, others take up sentry positions, standing tall to scan for danger and sounding sharp alarm calls when threats appear. Their young are raised communally, with babysitters, teachers, and protectors all playing their part as pups learn to dig, hunt, and navigate their world. Meerkats also share a fascinating relationship with the Drongo bird: a clever companion that mimics their alarm calls to influence their behaviour — sometimes as a genuine warning, and other times to steal a dropped insect snack.
