Hoopoes are wonderfully expressive birds, and their courtship is just as charming as their appearance. A pair bond often begins with the male’s soft, resonant “hoop-hoop-hoop” call echoing through the bush. This call is both an invitation and a declaration — telling females he’s ready to mate and warning other males to stay clear. When a female shows interest, the male begins his courtship display: crest raised, wings slightly flared, and offering her food such as insects or grubs. This gentle feeding ritual is an important part of forming their bond. If she accepts, the pair solidifies their partnership for the breeding season. Hoopoes typically nest in natural cavities — tree holes, walls, even old woodpecker nests — and the male continues to provide food while the female incubates the eggs. Their striking crests, fluttering displays, and distinctive call all play a role in how these charismatic birds choose and keep their mates.
